Welsummers
get their name from the Dutch village of Welsum. Only after arriving in
the US did the name become Welsummer ,as we know it today. This breed is a
medium size bird and a great layer of over 150 eggs a year. A hardy breed
that loves to forage, it can save you on the feed bill. The
Welsummer is a beautiful bird to look at, and it was developed from
several crosses such as the Wyandotte, Leghorn, Cochin, Barnevelder as
well as the Rhode Island Red. Kellogg's decided the bird was so colorful,
they decided it to be the perfect mascot for their cereal brand. Hens
although are great layers, seldom become broody, however when they do,
they generally do not make good mothers. They lay a beautiful large dark
brown egg, sometimes with even darker spots. Because of this wonderful egg
color, these birds have become quite popular.
