Named after the Dutch town of Barneveld where they originated, this bird is a medium heavy breed. It was developed from a 19th century cross of the Dutch landrace chickens and Asian breeds imported to Europe such as the Brahmas, Cochin, Croad, Langshan and Malay. Although colors available are Black , White, Dark Brown, Blue, Partridge, and Silver, the most common and popular is the double laced. Barnevelders are a hardy dual purpose bird. They are not only great layers of a dark brown eggs, (laying over 180 eggs per year), but also make a nice table bird as well. They have also been known to lay quite well all winter long and they have such a nice disposition, making they suitable for families with children. Hens weight about 6 1/2 pounds while the roosters weigh approximately 8 1/2 pounds. Hens can become broody and make excellent mothers. |
