Penedesenca
The Penedesenca breed dates back to 1921 where they were raised mainly in the Catalonia province of Spain. The breed was popular with the local country residents as a backyard chicken that was very prolific at laying very dark reddish-brown eggs. The Penedesenca is the exception to the rule that white ear lobed chickens lay white eggs. To this day the only recognized color of the breed is the Black, and it is only recognized in Spain. The Penedesenca is still not recognized here in the USA.
The breed was nearing extinction by the early 80's and recovery efforts began in 1982 to save and protect the breed. Dr. Amadeu Francesch and Dr. Antonio Jord?began working to standardize the breed after they had developed over 300 hens and rooster to match, bringing the breed back from near extinction. The breed which has been developed into 4 colors ( Black, Crele, Partridge, and Wheaten) has now been distributed to Catalonia, Spain, Holland , Germany, U.K., Ireland and USA in order to ensure its survival. Efforts are still ongoing here, as this breed is still considered very very rare in the USA. |
